How to Pick a Private School

Searching for an Alternative to Public School? Here’s What to Consider

Whether your child is just beginning their school journey or transitioning from a public school, you’re likely exploring alternatives—and there are many. From private academies to faith-based schools, it can be difficult to know which path is right for your family. Below are key distinctions to help guide your decision.

Private Schools vs. Christian Schools

Many private schools offer rigorous academics and excellent facilities. However, as for-profit institutions, they often come with a higher tuition cost and typically lack the Christ-centered values many parents seek in a school community.

Large Religious “Mega-Schools”

North Alabama is home to several large, well-known religious schools. These institutions often mirror public schools in size and structure, with large class sizes and bustling campuses. Their tuition and fees can be 50–100% higher than other Christian schools in the region.

Over the years, families who transferred to HCA from these schools consistently share how our smaller class sizes create a more personalized learning environment. Parents build closer relationships with teachers and staff, and students are truly seen and known.

If your child feels lost in the crowd, whether in a public or large private school, we invite you to schedule a tour. Let them experience firsthand what it feels like to be loved and valued at HCA.

What to Expect from a Christian School

At a Christian school, your child will be taught the Bible and encouraged to live out Christian values daily. As you tour schools, be sure to evaluate more than just academics or extracurriculars. Pay attention to the character of the teachers and the spiritual environment on campus. A Christ-centered culture makes all the difference.

What Does Accreditation Mean?

Accreditation means a school has voluntarily met the standards of a nationally recognized educational organization. These standards cover class sizes, curriculum, school management, grading policies, and teacher qualifications. Accredited schools undergo thorough audits every five years and report on key performance metrics annually. Keep in mind—not all schools are accredited.

HCA is fully accredited by the American Association of Christian Schools (AACS). Our teachers are dedicated Christian professionals—many hold master’s degrees, PhDs, or have decades of real-world experience in their fields. More importantly, they are passionate about leading their students in love and truth.

Why HCA?

Founded in 1994, HCA is one of the most established Christian schools in North Alabama. We operate in partnership with several local churches but remain non-denominational. All parents are asked to subscribe to our Statement of Faith, which forms the foundation of our educational mission.
